What is Reiki?
Derived from Japan, Reiki is an ancient energy healing technique that’s been used to support the individual as a whole being. It’s a mind, body, soul modality that encourages clients to go within so they walk away feeling a sense of empowerment and ownership over their own healing journey. Using gentle touch, your Reiki Practitioner guides energy in a way that promotes the natural healing process within the body, restoring physical and emotional wellbeing.
2. What is energy?
Energy is flowing around, through and within all of us. Theres a few different names for this concept of energy, but the most common is the Yoga term ‘Life Force Energy’. Essentially Life force energy refers to our inner self, our vitality, our essence. It’s what makes us, us.
Growing up in the western society, generally we are taught about all the body systems except for the energy system. And yet collectively, we reference this ‘mystical’ energy system every single day! Usually, it’s the way we use our hands; waving, shaking, pushing… It’s our intuitive way of shifting or attracting energy! Tune in next time you see someone using their hands.
Secondly, we naturally place our hands over our energy centres (Chakras) in times of need. You’ll notice people place their hands over their chest (the heart Chakra) when feeling love, gratitude, or compassion. Or the Solar Plexus (in the upper abdomen); often people will hold this area when feeling anxious, unsure, or indecisive. Another one that you might recognise is the Third Eye Chakra (forehead); we rub our third eye when looking for clarity or if we’re feeling mentally unfocused or blocked.
I encourage you to notice this, once you see it, you can’t unsee it!
Finally, we reference energy with our words; often we don’t even notice we’re doing it! It’s usually when we’re describing or responding to someone’s essence (life force energy). You know, that special thing that makes them… them.
“She’s so grounded”
“I just feel so calm when I’m with you”
“You light up the room”
“I don’t know what it is, but I can’t handle him”
“He’s too much for me”
And I’m sure you’ll agree that our energy is contagious yeah? It only takes one bad mood to affect the whole house hold. It can be hard enough to pull yourself out of a funk, let alone a whole household.
And on the other hand, we can’t resist being drawn to people that exude joy and lightness! We are naturally attracted to the people that are projecting positivity and confidence.
Make sense? Great! Let’s move onto the next point.
3. How does the body heal itself?
Reiki helps us to see that our body has the power to heal itself. To understand this, let’s go back to basics.
I always use the example of a graze. When we fall over and graze our knee, we don’t sit there and tell our body how to heal do we? Our body simply knows what to do. It knows how to produce extra collagen, form a scab and naturally start the healing journey… ALL BY ITSLEF.
And yes, we might aid the situation with ointment or zinc, but that is the key… We can HELP the body, but it’s imperative to trust the wisdom and natural capabilities of the body.
And how do we build trust? Just like any relationship, it takes time and effort. Reiki helps us to tune into our body and discover a whole new level of respect for this vessel we call home.
Connecting with our body is one of the fundamentals of Reiki Healing.
4. Why is rest so important?
For our body to heal, it takes quite a lot of energy. So the best way to support any healing journey is to get some deep rest. Just like when we were kids, the saying ‘sleep it off’ really does come into play with Reiki.
In the fast paced world we live, we often don’t give our body much of a chance to rest. Sure, we sleep but often we’re playing catch up, being interrupted or not getting the quality sleep we need in order to restore.
So before I continue talking about healing; at the very least, Reiki is a extremely beneficial for helping you to simply rest in order to feel renewed.
When you have a Reiki session with me, I aim to facilitate a space for you to feel safe, warm and nurtured. Because this is an essential for those needing to be guided from the ‘fight & flight’ state into what we call ‘Rest & Digest’.
It’s here, in the rest & digest state that your body is able to pause and do it’s thing. Now please here me out when I say your body LOVES to communicate! Whether it’s a niggle or recurring nudge, your body uses simple yet effective sensations to communicate what it needs. Recieving Reiki gives you the time to sink into the bed and experience quality rest within the stillness. It’s an opportunity for you to check in with your body and hear what it has to say. At the end of your session, I am there to help you unpack anything that comes up and encourage any continued steps in the journey of healing.
Sound good? I hope so!
5. How does Reiki heal trauma?
Reiki encourages us to come to self with compassion. As babies, we come into this world as innocent, pure little beings. As we grow up and experience life, the onion layers begin to form. Whether trauma is large or small, little pockets of distress are held within the body. Left unhealed, these little pockets of distress manifest and can turn into stress, anxiety and dis-ease in the body.
We use Reiki to help nurture and unblock trapped traumas within the body, creating natural flow within the energy system. People often resonate with the feeling of ‘clearing’ or ‘letting go’. They report a sense of lightness, like a weight has lifted from the shoulders. The main intention of Reiki is to restore peace and harmony within your system.
6. How does Reiki support mindset?
It’s important that we consider the mind when practicing Reiki. I’m sure you all know the magic of mindset work.
When receiving Reiki, at the start I will talk you though the concept of setting an intention. It’s such a simple tool that has a profound effect. When we go into the session with a specific intention, it gives you something to focus on within the stillness.
It’s no secret that we have increasingly busy minds these days; after all, we have trained ourselves to think quick, remember lots and keep up with the demands of everyday life.
So rather than laying on the Reiki bed trying to ‘get out of your head’ with no luck, we use intention setting as a tool to help. I will guide you to visualise how you would like to feel walking out the door and back into your daily life.
Sometimes the intention might be super simple; “I’d like to feel relaxed and calm” or other times it may be more focused; “I like to feel clarity (around a particular decision)”.
It can be physical “I’d like my body to have a chance to restore and reset”
Or maybe it will be spiritual “I’d like to experience a deep confirmation (around a particular situation)”
This not only gives you something you something to focus on but it gives me as a practioner some direction for the session. It also allows you to walk away from your session with a measured reflection. And you can carry this intention on, within your daily life. Which leads me to my next point.
7. Is Reiki a lifestyle?
It depends how you look at it. I can wholeheartedly say that Reiki has changed my life. Not only has it deepend my relationship with self, but it’s helped me to become a much calmer and more confident mother and wife. It’s helped me to sink into my intuition and allowed me to widen my understanding of the world around me.
See, it isn’t just about the hour you spend on the bed receiving Reiki, it’s about learning how to connect to and honour your energy system within the daily hustle. I firmly believe that knowledge is power, and I want all of my clients to walk away feeling a sense of understanding over their experience. After all, this is YOUR healing journey, not mine. So this is why I take the time to help you unpack your session and things that may have come up. We talk about ways you can support this healing journey at home. There are so many tools you can use to amplify the ongoing effects of Reiki, and I just love sharing them with you!
8. Should I get Reiki and Massage together?
If you are new to Reiki, my simple answer is, not yet. You might find that the magic of Reiki can get lost within the massage. And now that you can see the benefit of walking away educated and empowered, it would be such a shame to not experience the full sensations and benefits of this wonderful modality.
Once you feel super confident and tuned into your energy, by all means mix up the modalities, (they really do go well together!) but if you are new to it, I would spend the time becoming familiar with effects of Reiki in it’s own right.
I will say, for those of you that love a good massage, I offer a 10 minute head massage at the end of each reiki Session. Best of both worlds!
9. How often should I get Reiki?
Well when your new to the world of energy, it can take time to tune into it on the daily. And that’s why its most beneficial to get regular Reiki. The more you become familiar with your energy system in session, the easier it will be to channel this part of yourself within general life. Reiki truly is a gateway to finding the calm with the chaos. And who doesn’t want that right?
I will say, it’s different for everyone, most clients like to book in monthly but just see how you go. One of my clients calls it her ‘Wheel alignment’, and while it always makes me laugh, it’s so very true! If we want our car to run properly, we must maintain it’s bits and bobs along the way.
Of course, at the end of the day, it’s up to you. Why not give it a try and see how it sits with you.
10. Where do I book?
Before I say ‘Here!!’
What I will say is, do your research and find a practitioner that feels right for you. Often Reiki is intertwined with other modalities and each practitioner comes with their own approach. For Reiki to have the best results, it’s imperative that you feel safe and comfortable with your practioner.
